Although it’s very common to have PMS symptoms, it’s not optimally healthy.
After getting off hormonal birth control, I struggled with mood swings, hormonal breakouts, severe cramps, fatigue & painfully tender breasts leading up to my period. I was miserable!
Just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s biologically normal or healthy. Our western society deems severe PMS as “normal” & to pop a pill to ignore the symptoms. Being avoidant can lead to more severe issues if we continue to mask the symptoms and not get to the root cause.
Many menstrual & fertility issues can be traced back to diet & lifestyle.
As an integrative nutrition health coach specializing in hormone health, I took it upon myself to use food and lifestyle to support my body in healing.
One of the foods that worked for me holistically was this raw carrot salad! I ate the basic recipe every day for a whole month straight, did a liver cleanse & now I eat it more as maintenance about every other day.
Health Benefits of Raw Carrot Salad

Balance Hormones
One hormone out of balance can disrupt the whole endocrine system!
Most menstrual cycle problems are because of too much estrogen. High estrogen can mean low progesterone & low thyroid because they are all connected.
These imbalances lead to the common PMS side effects such as moodiness, heavy periods, hormonal acne, brain fog, painful tender breasts, migraines, bloating & severe cramps.
Excess estrogen is very common for women today due to many factors such as toxins in our food, household products, high stress, birth control use, excess alcohol consumption, nutrient deficiencies & excess body fat.
Raw carrot salad has properties that help bind to extra estrogens & detox them out of our system, allowing our hormones to balance & relieve PMS symptoms.
Gut Health
Gut health plays a HUGE role in our hormones & reproductive health.
Raw carrot salad can help flush out toxins & excess estrogen, stimulate digestion, reduce inflammation & promote healthy gut bacteria through its disinfecting & binding effects.
Having a healthy flowing digestive system that optimally removes toxins can minimize uncomfortable bloating & support daily bowel movements.
Liver Detox
Raw Carrot salad may help the liver by preventing estrogen reabsorption from the intestine, meaning the liver can more effectively regulate metabolism.
The liver is the primary detoxification organ & plays a significant role in our hormone health. Eating whole simple foods that support liver detox to remove extra toxins & estrogen will lower the overall toxic load in our system and allow our liver to function optimally to balance hormones & have a healthier cycle naturally.
Clear Hormonal Acne
Our skin is an overlooked organ that can tell us a lot about how our hormones & detoxification pathways are doing.
Hormonal acne related to our cycles is usually around the jawline, mouth, neck & chin. Excess estrogen can trigger a rise in androgens detoxed through our skin in the form of hormonal acne.
As we know, raw carrot salad helps support poor gut health, slow digestion, hormonal imbalances, and sluggish liver that could cause hormonal acne.
Prevent PMS
Eating raw carrot salad is not going to fix your PMS symptoms instantly. Still, it is a nutritional tool that can help prevent or minimize PMS as a part of holistic fertility supporting nutrition and lifestyle habits. I was consistent with one carrot salad a day for a whole monthly cycle to see improvements.
Raw Carrot Salad Ingredients
The essential ingredients for this recipe holistically work together to maximize health benefits. Please start with the basic recipe and add to it from here.
Carrots
Carrots have a unique indigestible fiber that helps strengthen gut health & binds to toxins & excess estrogen, prohibiting reabsorption when it reaches the intestines allowing the body to get rid of the toxins instead of recirculating them. It’s best to use organic carrots, as pesticides contribute to toxic estrogens we are trying to eliminate from the body.
Coconut Oil & Olive Oil
These oils add to the digestive & metabolism supporting benefits of the carrot.
Coconut oil has more antifungal, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties. It is more thyroid-promoting & intestinal healthy than olive oil, but a mixture of coconut and olive oil improves the flavor.
As always, use the highest quality of oil for maximum benefits.
Natural Salt
It’s best to use canning, pickling, or sea salt. Typical table salt can be processed, stripping away some of the nutritional minerals needed to maximize magnesium which is extremely important for hormone balance.
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
Raw apple cider vinegar aids in digestion, healthy microbiome & metabolism.

Notes
Best to eat mid-afternoon in between meals
It’s best to eat raw carrot salad daily between meals, and I usually eat mine mid-afternoon.
It can take time for the body to adjust. Sometimes when detoxing things get worse before they get better. Be consistent with one carrot salad daily for a monthly cycle to see improvements.
